MT Group Challenges Bison Producers on Herd Health Research
|
The Montana Bison Association today announced a $10,000 challenge grant to the National Buffalo Foundation as a step in promoting new research into issues affecting the health of bison herds across the country. The challenge grant was announced today at the annual meeting of the National Bison Association in Denver.
In announcing the grant, Montana Bison Association President Andrew Bardwell said, “As more ranchers build their herds in response to the rising consumer demand for bison meat, we want to be proactive in supporting research to make sure that we protect the health of our bison. We hope this grant will spur other individuals and organizations to support this type of research as well.” The Montana Bison Association contribution was made in the form of a matching challenge. Those funds will match any other contributions made to the National Buffalo Foundation on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
Dave Carter, executive director of the National Bison Association, welcomed the Montana contribution, saying, “Bison herd health issues have traditionally not been a funding priority for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or for traditional research institutions. That's why we know that we must take some steps to make sure we have the resources necessary for research to protect the health of our herds.” The National Bison Association is a non-profit membership organization that represents more than 1,000 ranchers, processors and marketers across the country. The National Buffalo Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation that supports education and research activities on behalf of the industry. The association and foundation work together on projects to benefit the bison business.

Winter MBA Conference
|
The annual meeting of the MBA was held in Billings on January 6 and 7, 2012 at the Best Western Kelly Inn and Suites. Christian MacKay spoke on Friday evening and Bison Chili was served. Saturday morning at the annual meeting Andrew Bardwell was elected to serve another 3 year term on the board, and Chris Sullivan was elected to take the board position of Dan Day. Dan has served 6 years, and we want to publicly thank him for his years of wisdom and service to the association. John Flocchini and Danny Johnson spoke to the group about bison health research. In the afternoon a panel consisting of producer- John Flocchini, processor-Bruce Anderson, and promoter-Dave Carter from the NBA, was informative for all in attendance. Tiny’s Tavern catered the lunch and dinner on Saturday. It was great to see some new faces and to welcome some new members to the MBA. The Fun Auction was a great success once again!
